Seeking protection: S. Rajakumari staging dharna in front of SP’s office on Thursday. TIRUNELVELI: A deserted lady staged dharna in front of the Office of the Superintendent of Police at Palayamkottai on Thursday seeking action against the members of the family of her in-laws, who allegedly tortured her in demand of more dowry and also the police who refuse to take action against them. S. Rajakumari of Sankarankovil, who was married to Subramanian of the same area in 2000, was allegedly tortured by her husband and his mother Shanmugaththammal, his sister Aavudaiyammal, relatives Meerakannu and Muniraj, demanding more dowries. Citing the reason that the couple did not have kids, her in-laws also started searching for a bride and the degree of torment increased substantially. When Ms. Rajakumari refused to sign in the divorce documents, she was forced to leave their house and started living in her uncle’s house at Melapalayam. “As my husband came there also and threatened me of dire consequences if I refused to sign the documents for divorce, I filed a complaint with Melapalayam police, who arrested him. However, my husband, who came out on conditional bail, attacked me and I was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. Instead of initiating criminal proceedings against my husband, the Sankarankovil police filed a case against me based on the complaint from my husband. Hence, the Superintendent of Police should initiate action against the erring police and those who remain as a threat to my life,” Ms. Rajakumari said. As she sat on the floor right in front of the main entrance of the SP’s Office, some of the police officials persuaded her to give up her agitation with the promise that they would initiate action against her husband and in-laws and instruct the police to deal her case.
