Karunanidhi launches computer scheme for students

Students who received laptops hailed from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts

Cheques handed over under scheme to bear higher education expenses of top three rankers

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday launched a Rs. 2.37-crore scheme for providing computers to 1,100 students of the Tamil medium, who scored high marks in Standard X public examinations in March.

He handed over the laptops to 10 students of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts at the Secretariat.

Under another scheme to bear higher education expenses of top three rankers at the State and district levels who had taken Tamil as a subject, Mr. Karunanidhi gave away a cheque for Rs. 7,500 to R. Ram Ambigai of St. Ignatius Girls Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, who scored 496 out of 500 marks.

Presents cheques

He presented cheques for Rs. 6,000 each to M. Joseph Stalin of St. John’s Higher Secondary School, Veravanallur, in Tirunelveli district; S. Zakeena, Sarahtucker GHSS, Palayamkottai; P. Maruthapandian, Fr. Hans Rover HSS, Perambalur; and S. Suvetha, St. Raphael’s GHSS, Santhome, Chennai. All of them scored 494 marks.

Mr. Karunanidhi gave away cheques for Rs. 5000 each to N. Rama Swathika, St. Ignatius GHSS, Palayamkottai; G.K. Umapriya, Sourashtra GHSS, Madurai; K. Indu, St. Mary’s GHSS, Salem; S. Selvaraj, Rani Meyyammai HSS, Puliyur CF, Karur; G. Gayathri, Amala GHSS, Musiri, Tiruchi district; M. Refaiahbegum, Govt. HSS, Thamarankottai, Pattukotttai (Thanjavur district); M. Thirumal, A.K.T. Memorial High School, Kallakurichi (Villupuram district); and V. Emlin Mercy, St. Mary’s GHSS, Chengalpattu (Kancheepuram district).

All of whom scored 493 marks.

In all, 13 students received Rs.71,500. School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu was present.

Mr. Karunanidhi presented a laptop and Rs. 12,000 to M. Rajesh Kumar, who finished first in the higher secondary examination and is the son of V. Mani, an employee of the Kancheepuram Milk Producers’ Union.

This was part of a scheme announced by Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan during the Budget session of the Assembly for honouring children of employees of the dairy sector.
