Nokia Siemens Networks to set up manufacturing facility at Oragadam

CHENNAI: The State government and Nokia Siemens Networks, a global enabler of communications services, signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday for setting up a telecommunication equipment manufacturing facility at Oragadam near here.

To be established at a cost of Rs.300 crore, the facility is meant for manufacturing base station, control tower station, microwave radios, IP/D slam access cards and other network elements.

Direct employment

It will provide direct employment to nearly 400 persons and indirect jobs to 100 others.

20.75 acres allotted

The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) has allotted 20.75 acres to the company, according to N. Govindan, chairperson-cum-managing director of the Corporation.

M.F. Farooqui, State Industries Secretary, and Suresh Wadhwani, Finance and Control–Head, India sub-region of the Nokia Siemens Networks, signed the MoU at the Secretariat, in the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Investor-friendly approach

Appreciating the State Government, particularly the Industries Department and the SIPCOT, for their investor-friendly approach, Mr. Wadhwani said the facility would essentially cater to the requirements of the domestic market.

The company would also be looking at opportunities for export, especially to South-East Asian countries. Among those present were L.K. Tripathy, Chief Secretary, and Klaus Lutz, head of integration of new operation of the company.
