Bail plea of accused in bomb blast cases rejected
Special Correspondent
Lower court told to conclude proceedings in three months
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed a plea by an accused seeking release on bail in two cases relating to bomb blasts.
In his order, Justice R. Regupathi directed the lower court to conduct trial on a day-to-day basis and conclude the proceedings in three months. If the prosecution failed to complete the trial within the stipulated period, the petitioner could approach the High Court for relief.
Riaz-Ur-Rehman (56) of Subash Nagar, Mysore, submitted that he was the owner of Indian Explosives Corporation Ltd., Mysore. He was implicated in the Coimbatore serial blasts case and surrendered before the police on March 2, 2000. He was remanded to judicial custody the next day.
Later, he was implicated in the Udumalpet bomb blast case, the Pandyan Express bomb blast case in Tiruchi and a perimeter wall blast case at Vepery here. He turned approver in the Coimbatore and Udumalpet cases and was acquitted. The other two cases were pending trial before a special court at Poonamallee. In all the cases, the charge against him was that explosive material used for the blast had been purchased from his shop. With a view to fixing the conspiracy, the prosecution had routinely booked him in all the cases.
He cited the Inspector, Special Investigation Team, CB CID, Chennai, as the respondent.
