BANGALORE: Kannada Development Authority Chairman and Bharatiya Janata Party MLC “Mukhyamantri” Chandru has written letters to Ministers in the BJP Government and the principal secretaries to various government departments to strictly adhere to norms related to implementation of Kannada as administrative language. Participating in a debate in the Legislative Council on Tuesday on the motion of thanks to the address of Governor Rameshwar Thakur to the joint session of both the Houses of the Legislature, Mr. Chandru said that he has, in the letters, asked the Ministers and bureaucrats to use only Kannada while writing comments on the official files. They should also ensure that all the official files are put up in Kannada. He expressed concern that the implementation of Kannada as administrative language was still incomplete. This process will get a boost if the Ministers and top bureaucrats strictly adhere to norms, he observed. The process of use of Kannada in administration should start from the top level of administration, he said. He also appealed to the Council Chairman not to allow legislation if they were enacted only in English. Legislation should be enacted in Kannada and then translated into English, he said. Mr. Chandru said he had requested Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to widen the scope and jurisdiction of the authority so that it can protect the interests of Kannadigas residing in other States and foreign countries. The second generation of Kannada NRIs need support from the State to strengthen their roots here. This would help in getting their investments to the State, he said. Mr. Chandru said he had received several complaints alleging that there were no Kannada signboards at the Devanahalli airport. As per the language policy, it was mandatory to use State language in the signboards and name boards along with Hindi and English.
