Employees seek aid for MG University

KOTTAYAM: Mahatma Gandhi University Employees’ Association has called upon the authorities to extend immediate financial assistance to the university.

In a submission made to the Chief Minister, Education Minister, and Finance Minister, the association said the academic functioning of the university was being threatened by an acute financial crunch.

The university, which commenced functioning in 1983, was recognised for disbursement of non-plan fund only in 1991.

The amount had been fixed at Rs.1.90 crore. As per the rules, the non-plan grant is calculated on the basis of this amount.

The non-plan fund granted for the year 2007-08 is Rs. 24 crore but the expenditure on salary and pension alone would come to Rs.47 crore.

Other universities which had commenced functioning after the inception of MG University were given a higher rate of non-plan grant.

The association called upon the authorities to rectify the anomaly and extend immediate assistance to the institution which was celebrating its silver jubilee year this year. Association president P.S. Satheesh Babu and general secretary K. Sherefuddin led the team which made the submissions.
