Four arrested for attempt to murder

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Four alleged contract killers, who attempted to murder a woman in March 2006, have been arrested at Konanakunte by the Subramanyapura police on Thursday. The person who had contracted them to kill a woman, a distant relative, has been arrested. The police identified the arrested as Cheluvaraya (32), and his associates Macchu (23), Sadiq (23) and Venkatesh (24). The police said the accused confessed of attempting to kill Vijaylakshmi of Uttarahalli on March 9, 2006, after the son of a flour mill owner offered them Rs. 50,000 for executing the contract killing.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) S. Ravi, Sunil Kumar, a resident of Basavanagudi, had given Rs. 50,000 to Cheluvaraju of Siddapura and his three alleged accomplices to murder Vijayalakshmi. Kumar suspected that his father Tukaram, who runs a flour mill and finance firm, would give all his property to Vijayalakshmi.

He said that the four who had barged into the house of Vijaylakshmi had sprayed mosquito repellent on her face before stabbing her abdomen. Suguna, the daughter-in-law of Vijaylakhsmi, who came to her rescue, was threatened.

“In order to give it a colour of robbery, the miscreants took away with Rs. 15,000 in cash and two gold chains,” Mr. Ravi said.

Investigation

During the course of investigation related to another case, the police caught Cheluvaraju and his accomplices in Konanakute. Cheluvaraju then spilled the beans about the March 9 incident and provided information about Sunil Kumar. The police then arrested Sunil Kumar, who reportedly admitted to have given the money.

The police then called Vijayalakshmi, who recognised the accused who had allegedly assaulted her.
