NEW DELHI: To prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases and to promote population stabilisation, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi plans to install 2,000 condom vending machines at various toilet complexes, parking sites and other public places across the Capital. The machines would be installed in collaboration with the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, National AIDS Control Programme and Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust. MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said on Friday: “We are committed to preventing HIV/AIDS and STDs. We are already providing free counselling services at a number of our hospitals and through a network of maternity and child welfare centres. Installing condom vending machines is also seen as an extension of the civic body’s responsibility towards citizens.” Mr. Gupta said in view of the inhibition and social taboo associated with condoms, a majority of the sexually active population hesitates to procure them from chemist shops and other outlets.
