Thiruvananthapuram: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in protest against “Communist Party of India (Marxist) and police attacks on agitating Yuva Morcha workers” was largely peaceful in the district. The hartal was near total. In Neyyattinkara, hartal supporters attacked a government official. The victim, Sreekumar, a field inspector attached to the assistant registrar’s office, was admitted to the taluk hospital with minor injuries. The police registered a case of causing simple hurt against eight BJP workers. Hartal supporters smashed a windscreen of a private car at Palode. None were hurt in the incident. Hartal supporters blocked vehicles at Choorakattupalayam and threw stones at autorickshaws near Mannanthala. Nearly 100 BJP workers staged a dharna in front of the Secretariat. Inaugurating the protest, Yuva Morcha State president K. Surendran said the police were targeting BJP workers because the organisation had dared to bring to light the corrupt dealings of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and his family members. He said the police, supported by armed CPI(M) activists and pro-Left government officials, attacked Yuva Morcha workers agitating for just causes in front of the Secretariat. Hundreds of BJP men would march to the Assembly on July 9, he said. Communist Party of India (CPI-M) workers held marches in different parts of the district late on Friday to protest against BJP and Youth Congress workers who were agitating against the Left Democratic Front government on different issues. At Poonthura, CPI-M workers destroyed BJP flags. At Andoorkonam, they tore posters placed by the People’s Democratic Party. The police defused the situation.
