THANJAVUR: Nearly a lakh farmers in Thanjavur district have benefited out of loan waiver given by the nationalised banks, said Collector C.Vijayaraj Kumar here on Friday. Presiding over the monthly farmers grievances day meeting, the Collector said that the banks had waived loans of Rs. 137.92 crore. A total of 23,987 farmers benefited from the waiver of co-operative loans of Rs. 29.07 crore, the Collector said. The Collector said that it has been planned to raise kuruvai on 40,000 hectares, samba on 1,18,500 hectares and thaladi on 18,000 hectares this year in the district. Water level stood at 103.31 ft as on Friday at Mettur Dam and the storage was 69.199 tmc ft. Fifteen thousand cusecs of water is released from Mettur Dam. From Grand Anicut, 3,771 cusecs each is released into Cauvery and Vennar, 1,804 cusecs into Grand Anicut canal and 1,028 cusecs into Kollidam. Kuruvai transplantationTransplantation of Kuruvai has been completed so far on 12,240 cusecs. Agriculture Department has sold 235 tonnes of Kuruvai seeds, co-operatives 70 tonnes and private companies 600 tonnes. With respect to fertilisers, 16,240 tonnes have been procured and sold. There is a stock of 3784 tonnes. Flood relief not paidFarmers from Thiruvaiyaru complained that they have not been given flood relief for the damage to their crops during March rain. Durai Balakrishnan, a farmer from Orathanadu, said that he raised cocoa as inter crop in coconut groves under National Horticulture Mission. Horticulture department has to provide fifty per cent subsidy in the first year, 20 per cent in the second year and thirty per cent in third year. Under the subsidy, the department has given neem cakes for applying as fertiliser. But the cakes are not of good quality. There is no neem fragrance in the cakes. He appealed to the Collector to look into the matter and ask the department to supply quality fertilisers. M. Karunakaran, District Revenue Officer, Moorthy, Superintending engineer, PWD, Pon.Kaliyamurthy, Member of Farmers’ Welfare Board, participated in the meeting.
