First batch of trainee archakars passes out

MADURAI: Students of the first batch of the Archakar Training Centre have passed out successfully.

The centre is one among the seven started last year under the State government’s ‘Anaivarum Archakar Aagalaam’ scheme.

“Thirty five students have cleared the examinations conducted by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. While 13 were from Backward Classes, 12 were from MBCs, eight from Scheduled Castes and two Brahmins,” K. Rajanayagam, Joint Commissioner, HR and CE Department and Executive Officer of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, told The Hindu here on Thursday.

The students took a written test, apart from a viva voce and practical examination. The course began in May 2007 and ended in June 2008.

While training in Saivite system of pujas was imparted in Chennai, Madurai, Palani, Tiruchendur and Tiruvannamalai, centres at Srirangam, Tiruchi and Triplicane imparted Vaishnavite system.

The Madurai centre is run by the Meenakshi temple, which has given its building for the centre and is bearing all expenses.
