NH work to be completed soon

Kottayam: Public Works Minister Mons Joseph has said work on the four-lane National Highway 47 and 17 from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod will be completed soon.

The areas of work under NH 47 include the roads of Walayar, Thrissur, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, while that of NH 17 Kasaragod, Mangalore and Kochi. Acquisition of land has already started and work would be handed over to a company and implemented under the supervision of National Highway Authority of India on build, operate and transfer basis. The agreement would be signed between the Authority and the company, he said.

Stressing the need for “high speed corridor”, the Minister said he would study the feasibility of its implementation in the State. The Kerala State Transport Department in tie-up with the Public Works Department would implement a detailed road development policy.

The Minister said roads for which land acquisition was completed and those for which it is going on would be listed for consideration under Kerala State Transport Project. The incomplete work on MC Road would be taken up on priority basis. In the first phase, work on the stretch between Thiruvananthapuram and Chengannur of M C Road would be completed within one-and-a-half-years. The second phase includes the stretch from Chengannur to Muvattupuzha.

The Minister said the government would also initiate steps for a highway along the hill ranges of the State.

The proposed heavy maintenance project, which include maintenance for five years, in the works contract would be

started this year. The Sabarimala Road Development scheme would be the first of the works to be taken up under the project.

Mr. Mons said a plan was drawn up for reviving works that had been stalled for various reasons. The works include
