4,257 neo-lits thanks to Govt. scheme

JAIPUR: The Continuing Education Programme in Rajasthan has started showing positive results for neo-literates, who are witnessing qualitative changes in their lives and have access to better livelihood options now.

In Jaipur district alone, 4,200 women have received vocational training under the scheme, through which they can supplement their household incomes.

According to an official release here, as many as 477 self-help groups (SHGs) comprising beneficiaries of the programme in the district have deposited Rs.14.66 lakh in their savings accounts. The scheme has been operative here since November 2005 through 1,074 continuing education centres and 102 nodal centres. 4,257 neo-literates appeared at the certification examination to get a formal recognition of their new status as “educated and well-read” people. The nodal centres provide a variety of literature to the neo-literates to make them aware of the various issues confronting contemporary society.

Rs.1.13 crore deposited

Citizens were encouraged to donate books on various subjects to the continuing education centres. In order to improve the living standard of the beneficiaries, the State Government deposited Rs.1.13 crore in the small savings accounts of the member SHGs. The release said as many as 1,867 family planning operations were performed through the motivators. UNICEF is carrying out a functional literacy programme with the help of young people.

The release stated that the NCC cadets taught the neo-literates at bi-weekly classes between September 2007 and Feburary 2008 in 188 continuing education centres.

67 prisoners in Jaipur Central Jail were trained to act as motivators and encourage the people to join the programme.
