State Bank adopts six students

TIRUCHI: Six students of Seva Sangam Girls Higher Secondary School were adopted by State Bank of India, Tiruchi, as a part of the bank’s ‘Girl child adoption’ scheme.

Giving away the scholarships to the students on Thursday, Collector T. Soundiah said private sector must come forward to accept social responsibility and provide support to the poor and destitute.

School education has become accessible to most children through the support of the government. Costs of college education, he observed, have sky-rocketed and students from lower-income groups were forced to drop out after higher secondary education. He appealed to philanthropists and private institutions to volunteer financial help and sponsor higher education of the deserving students.

Two students – N. Jayalakshmi, class X, and M. Saranya, class V - were adopted by the bank last year and would continue to get financial support. This year, the bank has added four more students – S. Srinadhi, class VIII, S. Subhashri, class VII, S. Sonia, class VI, and S. Nandhini, class III.
