Temple kalasam missing

Special Correspondent

ARIYALUR: The ‘kalasam’ of Maha Ganapathi Sannidhi at the centuries-old Sri Brahadeeswara Temple at Gangaikondacholapuram near Jayamkondam was reported missing on Friday.

The ‘kalasam’ atop the sannadhi, located at the southern end of the massive temple complex, was reported to have been in a shaky condition.

Police said the 2.5 feet tall copper kalasam was found missing by the temple watchmen early this morning. The 11th century temple was built by Rajendra Chola.

Police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by the temple authorities.

A few months ago, an abortive attempt was made to steal the kalasam from another shrine in the temple complex.
