Long wait: Hundreds of farmers queue up to collect fertilizer in Chitradurga on Friday. Chitradurga: Over 1,000 farmers procured fertilizers from the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) here on Friday. According to sources in the Agriculture Department, a fresh consignment of 178 tonnes of fertilizers was received from the State Government, which was distributed to 1,000-odd farmers. The fertilizers were distributed under heavy security and under the supervision of Agriculture Department officials. The distribution took place at six points across the city. Speaking to The Hindu, Joint Director of the Agriculture Department B.R. Shankar said that the department distributed 10,700 tonnes of fertilizers for the kharif season and it required 15,200 tonnes more. “We are expecting another 2,000 tonnes of fertilizers to arrive in the district. For the month of July, we will be receiving another 11,000 tonnes,” he said. As instructed by Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas, each farmer was given one bag for each acre of land for a maximum of five acres. The farmers were asked to bring legal deeds to their land to procure the fertilizers. With the district witnessing widespread protests by the farmers over the shortage of fertilizers, the administration had constituted taluk-level committees to ensure proper distribution of available fertilizers. The committees are headed by tahsildars, while assistant directors of the Agriculture Department have been made member secretaries.
