Vedike members lock Bellary sub-registrar’s office

Vedike is protesting against ‘an abnormal increase’ in guidance value in Bellary city

‘We will continue the agitation until our

demands are met’


BELLARY: Members of the Sarvajanika Hitarakshana Vedike on Friday locked the sub-registrar’s office here to protest against the registration of two sale agreements, which they said had taken place before reduction in the value of the properties fixed by the Central Valuation Committee (CVC).

The dharna organised by the residents and representatives of various organisations, under the banner of the vedike, since March 1 this year in front of the sub-registrar’s office opposing what they term an abnormal increase in the guidance value in Bellary city entered the 117th day on Friday.

The process of registration of sale and purchase agreements has come to a standstill since the dharna began.

The average loss of revenue to the Revenue Department has been estimated to be around Rs. 1 crore a month.

The valuation committee had classified 35 wards falling under the city corporation limits into 628 areas and fixed the values.

According to the vedike, there had been an abnormal increase in the value of property compared to the valuation done in 2006.

“We are not opposed to the normal increase of value ranging from 10 to 30 per cent over the previous year. But the valuation done this year will hit the poor and salaried middle class,” N. Pratap Reddy, convener of the vedike, told The Hindu.

The protest on Friday was withdrawn after the police intervened and the sub-registrar gave an assurance that no property would be registered until the property valuation issue was settled.

Earlier this year, the Chairman of the CVC held several rounds of discussions with representatives of the vedike and passed an order on June 25 revising the value of the properties here. According to official sources, the CVC had re-allocated certain areas, where an abnormal increase in value was seen.

No benefit

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Reddy said that after going through the revised list, it appeared that the benefit was not being passed on to the people.

He said that he had asked the officials to provide details of areas where the value had been reduced. “As of now we will continue the agitation until our demands are met”, he said.
