Decision taken without discussion: farmers’ leaders Government urged to cancel the allocation BELLARY: The district units of Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) and Ritha-Krishi Karmikara Sanghatane (RKS) have urged the State Government not to allocate water from the Tungabhadra dam to the new industrial units coming up in Bellary and Koppal districts. K. Somashekar and E. Hanumanthappa, SUCI and RKS secretaries respectively, in a press release, said the allocation of 7.6 tmcft of water to nine industries and a proposal to provide 1.32 tmcft of water to three more new industrial units had been a matter of concern for farmers. Irrigation coverThey pointed out that only a part of the two districts got irrigation cover and yet farmers in the last mile command areas suffered. Without taking any steps to overcome the problems, allocating water to the industrial units was anti-farmer, they said. The two leaders took exception to the Government’s decision to allocate water to the industries without discussing the issue with farmers and political parties. Apart from urging the Government not to allocate water from the reservoir for industries and withdraw the allocation already made to a few industries, they demanded the Government to convene a meeting to discuss the problems faced by farmers.
