BERHAMPUR: Braving the torrential rains the CPI(M), CPI and the Samajwadi Party activists held a demonstration in front of the Malkangiri collectorate on Friday demanding the release of Raghu Majhi, a CPI(M) activist of the district, who was branded as naxal activist and arrested in relation to a murder. Around 1,000 supporters of these parties led by Malkangiri CPI(M) district secretary Braja Majhi, district secretary of the CPI Haladhar Pujari and district president of the Samajwadi Party Kamraj Kawasi took part in this demonstration. Theyhanded over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister demanding unconditional release of the CPI(M), to Malkangiri District Collector Nitin Jawale. Despite the rain they held public meeting near the office of the collector.. State secretariat member of the CPI(M) Ali Kishore Patnaik and CPI state leader Banalata Jena attended the public meeting. The leaders in their speeches alleged that the arrest of the CPI(M) activist after branding him to be a naxal was not an isolated case. Several innocent people in the district were arrested on false charges, they alleged. Mr. Patnaik alleged that in remote areas engineers were making false bills for works which were never taken up. The labourers do not get minimum wage and machines are used to do NREGS work in its remote areas. When CPI(M) workers like Raghunath try to bring it to the fore they are being bookedin false cases, he allegedMr Majhi alleged that the Forest Rights committees had been formed only on paper in Malkangiri district and BPL families were not getting their quota of subsidised rice in remote areas of the district.
