Boy dies after falling into open well

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A four-year-old boy, Sandip, died after he fell into an uncovered, surface well in St. Thomas Mount.

His body was noticed at the bottom of the near dry well on Friday.

The St. Thomas Mount police said that Sagar Sheikh and his wife Sheera Bibi belonged to Rashidpur in Birbhum district of West Bengal. They were working at a construction site on V.O.C. Street.

They were staying there along with their two sons - Sandip and his one-year-old younger brother.

On Thursday evening, Sandip went out to play. When he did not return till night, his parents panicked and started to search for him.

On Friday morning, one of the workers noticed the boy lying at the bottom of the 70-foot well. There was water for a depth of just one foot from the bottom. Workers flung ropes into the well and entered it to retrieve the body.

The police said the well was covered by heaps of sand and construction rubble, sloping towards the uncovered surface of the well. The boy had sustained injuries on his head, the police said.
