30,000 readers visit libraries every day in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: Although several basic amenities are being provided in the village panchayats under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, many panchayats approached the Nagapattinam district administration to establish new public libraries.

The Nagapattinam district administration had set up public libraries in 142 panchayats under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and these libraries were being supplied newspapers and magazines and books useful to the people.

Official sources told The Hindu on Friday that an average 30,000 readers were coming to these libraries every day and several panchayat chiefs had already applied for setting up libraries in their villages. “These libraries are a boon to the society and the students,” they say.

Basic amenities

Meanwhile, Collector M. Jayaraman said that a number of other basic amenities including creation of new ponds, provision of protected drinking water supply, concrete roads, street lights, rural playgrounds and development of cremation yard in the villages were being provided in 86 village panchayats this year (2008-09) in the district.

The district administration had already spent Rs.16.40 crore for providing basic amenities in 82 panchayats during 2006-07 and Rs.16.80 crore during 2007-08 in 84 panchayats in the district.

The Collector appealed to the village panchayats to maintain the basic amenities provided to them under the scheme and ensure proper use of the libraries.
