Governor, Chief Minister condole Manekshaw’s death

CHENNAI: Prominent personalities, led by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, have condoled the death of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, hero of the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

In a message to Sam Manekshaw’s daughter Maya Batliwala, the Governor described him as an architect of many military triumphs. “His mature war strategy and motivation of forces brought laurels to India and the Indian Army.”

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said the nation had lost a “veteran soldier and a war hero.” His distinguished career, extending over 40 years, would stand in the annals of military history as a shining example of leadership and excellence in military warfare. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa said Sam Manekshaw’s death was an irreparable loss to the nation and the defence establishment of the country. “The people of India have lost an illustrious son, a true patriot and a person who served the nation with great distinction.” MDMK general secretary Vaiko also condoled the death of Sam Manekshaw. The government declared official mourning on Friday.
