Lorry, van drivers hold protest against diesel price hike
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Lorry and van drivers in seven places in the city and 17 places across the State on Friday protested against the hike in diesel prices. Nearly 500 members of the Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur Lorry, Tanker, Tipper, Trailer Van Owners Associations Welfare Committee participated. Around 100 members were arrested. They were later let off.
R. Sukumar, chairman of the committee, said the drivers had four demands, including the implementation of a service tax agreement signed in 2004 and consultations before any hike in fuel prices. They also demanded discussions on toll rates and speeding norms on toll roads.
The first demand was fulfilled by the Finance Secretary on Thursday at a meeting held in Delhi, Mr. Sukumar said.
Indefinite strike
The drivers would go on indefinite strike from the midnight of July 1 if their other demands were not met.
