Institution of Engineers to increase student chapters

TIRUCHI: The Institution of Engineers (India) aims to increase its students’ chapters in engineering colleges across the country in the near future, its Secretary and Director General Commander Arvind Poothia said here on Saturday.

The IEI has so far formed 380 students’ chapters in various engineering colleges across the country and aims to increase it to 500 students’ chapters, he said while addressing the media here.

Through the students’ chapters, the IEI members have been explaining about the requirements of the industry to the engineering students, facilitating their technical visits to industrial units and involving the students in the seminars organised by the institution at periodic intervals.

The IEI, the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers headquartered at Kolkata, had also formed over 400 students’ chapters in different polytechnics with a view to help students pursue technical education in such institutions as well.

The IEI has planned to develop the soft skills of those students who had registered for the Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers degree programme, conducted by the institution.

The details were being worked and the soft skill development programme would commence in a year’s time, Mr. Poothia said.

The IEI president R.P. Gupta said that the institution in consultation with other professional institutions had prepared the Engineers Bill and sent it to the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development to be made as an Act.

An important feature of the bill is that an engineer who wishes to practice engineering would need to get registered through the Council of Engineers, he said. The IEI has also decided to present Engineers Award to young engineers during the national convention of different engineering divisions of the institution.

The award has been proposed to motivate young engineers. He said that the institution plans to increase its membership by another one lakh during this year.

With a membership of six lakh at present, the IEI has 94 centres across the country and five overseas chapters.

Mr. Gupta and Mr. Poothia were in the city to attend the three-day 648th Council Meeting of the IEI hosted by the institution’s Tiruchi Local Chapter.

The meeting would deliberate among others the institution management affairs, engineers’ status, professional affairs besides deciding upon the venue and date for the Indian Engineering Congress.

Around 100 members from various parts of the country are taking part in the Council Meeting.
