BERHAMPUR: The tussle continues between the traders and the State government over ‘Orissa Foodstuffs (licensing and storage) Control order 2008. If the issue is not settled soon then it may affect relief work if any flash floods occur again in July. It may also lead to scarcity of essential commodities in market. The market of essential commodities in the State is facing this threat as the traders have decided not to procure anything for their stock after July 10, if the Government did not roll back its ‘Orissa Foodstuffs (licensing and storage) Control order 2008. As per the notification of this order traders dealing with essential commodities like edible oil, cereals and pulses would have to obtain a license and their stock capacity would be restricted as per the amounts declared in the notification. The traders and consumer activists are opposing this new order of the State Government saying it would bring in black marketing, price rise and scarcity in Orissa market as except rice of all other essential food materials have to be imported and stocked in Orissa. Restrictions on the amount of their storage would decrease the supply leading to their price rise. Opposing the order the traders did not register themselves for the new license. As per the notification the order was to come into effect from June 20. Due to opposition of the traders the State Government has decided to extend the date to July 20 and all traders have been directed to get themselves registered as per the order by July 19.
