INTERACTION: A meeting of exporters under way in Tuticorin.

Tuticorin: The Shellac and Forest Products Export Promotion Council (SHEFEXIL) organised an interactive meeting on ‘Integrated approach for enhancing competencies for senna exports’ here on Friday.

Debjani Roy, Executive Director, explained how the council had been functioning as a bridge between the trade and the government to augment export of non-timber forest produce, including medicinal plants.

Raja Sankaralingam, treasurer, Tuticorin Senna Exporters’ Association, said that the government should provide entitlement of duty scrip equivalent to 10 per cent of the FOB (free on-board) value of exports to senna exporters on a par with marine products and textile sectors.

“We get only five per cent export incentive through Visesh Krishi and Gram Udyog Yojana,” he said. The Central Government must encourage mass cultivation of senna and other herbs suited for arid regions with the help of non-governmental organisations.

A central laboratory facility and a well-equipped processing yard should be set up in Tuticorin to enhance quality of senna exports from the region.

“A processing yard with facilities to pack products will help exporters fetch premium prices in the niche markets,” he added.

G. A. Rajkumar, special commissioner, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, was present.
