Revamp health sector, say doctors

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: After successfully driving their agitation for upward revision in their salary structures, Government doctors of the State are now out to press for an overhaul in health sector.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, President of Orissa Medical Services Association (OMSA) Madhusudan Mishra appealed the State Government to include technical persons such as doctors in the highest bodies of health, planning, policy-making and implementation.

Orissa Government’s promise to start restructuring of health sector within two-months was yet to become a reality, Dr. Mishra said. He warned that delay in carrying out restructure would lead to chaotic situation in the health sector in days to come. The OMSA demanded the State government should give emphasis on human component than accelerating the process of purchasing costly equipments.

“We need at least 10,000 to 12,000 doctors to manage healthcare in the State. However, against the sanctioned strength of 4,258, which was decided 30 years ago, only 3,000 doctors were recruited so far,” Dr. Mishra said.

Many health institutions were functioning without a doctor practicing modern medicine. Moreover, the State was yet to promulgate an ordinance regarding safeguard of the life and properties of doctors on duty,” Nihar Samal, OMSA’s Bhubaneswar secretary, said. Meanwhile, OMSA has prepared a 31-point draft restructuring plan for health sector recommending technical persons to head different wings.
