Madikeri: The Akhila Kodava Samaja will not assign family names to those from outside the Kodava clan in future, it was decided at the annual general meeting of the samaja held in Virajpet on Saturday. Bylaw of the samaja will be amended to discontinue the practice in future. The samaja had drawn flak recently over assigning Kodava family name to a person from Bangalore, who had married a Kodava girl, based on the request of that person. The meeting unanimously decided to stop the practice of assigning family names to non-Kodavas marrying Kodavas, after a discussion over the issue, according to information gathered here. President of the samaja Matanda C. Monappa presided over the meeting. Representatives of various units of Kodava Samaja, and “takka mukhyastas” (headmen and chiefs) from villages and “nads” presented their views in the meeting.
