“No breakthrough in varsity staff murder case” “Transfer the case to CBI” PUDUCHERRY: Central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Rajya Sabha member T.K. Rangarajan has sought the intervention of Union Ministry of Human Resources Development to rectify the anomalies in the functioning of Pondicherry University. Secretary of Puducherry unit of CPI (M) V. Perumal told reporters here that Mr. Rangarajan, on Friday, had written a letter to HRD Minister Arjun Singh seeking his intervention to streamline the functioning of the university and to order a thorough probe into the alleged irregularities in the conduct of examinations. A copy of the letter was released to the mediapersons. According to Mr. Perumal, Mr. Rangarajan, had said that the territorial police failed to identify the culprits behind the murder of Jayaraman, the university staff who had lodged a complaint with the Deputy Registrar of the University about irregularities in the allocation of marks in the engineering semester examination. The letter highlighted the irregularities in the preparation of mark sheets in the examination wing of the university and the steps taken by Jayaraman to bring to notice of the higher-ups the malpractices committed by a section of the staff, Mr. Perumal said. Tamil Nadu State Committee member of CPI (M) T. Murugan, who was also present at the press meet, said that though the murder was committed more than a month ago, the police were yet to achieve any breakthrough. The party wanted the case to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, he said, adding that they were willing to join hands with any political outfit for taking up the issue. As regards the reported “derogatory” remarks made by the Chief Secretary against the Council of Ministers at a review meeting, Mr. Murugan said if the official had any complaints against the Ministers, he should have had taken up the issue with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
