On the move: TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu waving at the crowd during his Mee Kosam yatra at Paderu in Visakhapatnam district on Saturday. — PADERU: Leader of the Opposition and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the memoranda of understanding signed with Jindal and Ras al-khaimah for setting up alumina refineries in Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts were devoid of transparency. What were the norms followed for signing the MoU, he asked, at a press conference as part of his Mee Kosam yatra, which entered the 69th day on Saturday. ViolationMr. Naidu said the Congress Government had not called global tenders. Even bauxite mining by benami mode by the AP Mineral Development Corporation in the agency area was in violation of the Regulation 1 of 70 of the Tribal Land Transfer (Prevention) Act. Asked what he would do on the MoU if the TDP came to power, Mr. Naidu said the party would discuss and decide them. He said the tribal, political parties and mass organisations were against bauxite mining in the agency areas. He said mining would trigger environmental catastrophe. “It would destroy hills streams, stop water supply to plain areas for drinking and irrigation and displaced the tribals,” he said. Charge against YSRMr. Naidu said the resolution on bauxite mining taken by the Tribal Advisory Committee during his visit would not be valid now. He said he had dropped the decision to allow mining in 2001 in deference to public opinion. The TDP leader accused Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy of having vested interests in signing deals with Jindal and Ras al-khaimah. Mr. Naidu, who would take a break for a day on July 3 to take part in UNPA meeting in Delhi, said the UPA had failed to contain inflation and price hike. He said the loan waiver scheme had no clarity with the Government failing to issue guidelines to banks.
