C-DAC will provide Bharat Operating System for testing and validating software

CHENNAI: Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) will soon enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) for research and development, over five years, in open source software and e-Governance services in the government and academic sectors.

ELCOT, which has ventured into development of software solutions for various government departments using open source technology, had sought the State Government’s permission to tie up with the C-DAC, and the approval was accorded recently.

“As per the MoU, the C-DAC, the developer of Linux operating system called Bharat Operating System (BOSS), will offer it to ELCOT for testing and validating software. After certifying it, ELCOT will use it on large scale in government departments. The C-DAC will relocate part of its BOSS development team to ELCOT premises during the MoU period. The BOSS will be customised for testing and implementation,” ELCOT Managing Director C. Umashankar told The Hindu.

Software support centre

Meanwhile, ELCOT has set up an e-Governance software support centre in its head office. It provides active support to the government departments in software consultancy, development and implementation.

ELCOT has also providing e-governance software development, under web-based application, to the Registration Department, automating the operations of the District Central Co-operative Banks, the Directorate of Town and Country Planning, the Commercial Taxes Department, besides running the family card and online billing systems for fair price shops and the old age pension system.

About 108 sub-registrar offices will go online soon. The web-based core banking automation software is being tested in three Central Co-operative Banks in Chennai.

“This automated banking software will be implemented all over the State by ELCOT through its centralised mainframe serve hosting facility in Chennai. The banks will be connected to the centralised server through the Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network (TNSWAN) infrastructure with mesh technology. The Adambakkam branch has already been linked through TNSWAN,” Mr. Umashankar said.
