Prisoners to go on indefinite fast from July 2

HYDERABAD: Prisoners in at least six Central jails who are on relay hunger strike since June 25 to press their demands will launch an indefinite fast from July 2. The demands include release of life prisoners who completed seven years of their term, implementation of G.O. 197 (providing for release of all eligible prisoners) and freedom to prisoners to express themselves freely and hold meetings.

The Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners while expressing solidarity with the prisoners’ hunger-strike on Saturday called upon people and ‘democratic forces’ to join its agitation if the Government continued to overlook the demands.

At a press conference here, Lateef Mohd. Khan, committee secretary, and civil rights leaders K.G. Kannabiran, Varavara Rao, M.T. Khan, Gader, Chadranna of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions and Jeevan Kumar, vice-president, Human Rights Forum demanded implementation of the agreement reached in 1994 on prisoners’ demands.

The agreement was signed when P. Indra Reddy was Home Minister in the presence of leaders of several human rights and people’s organisations. It conceded 38 of the 43 demands.

The leaders alleged that the Government had issued orders on only 17 demands. Even they were not implemented during the four-year Congress regime. As a result the prisoners who completed seven years of their term continued to remain in jails. Many of them were languishing due to poor prison conditions. As a result a large number of prisoners had died, they stated.

The leaders appealed for doing away with restrictions placed on prisoners who have been branded ‘naxalites’ and ‘ISI supporters’.
