Unwanted: A two-day-old girl abandoned in a temple near Tiruchengode on Friday was admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital. —
SALEM: With her rosy cheeks and lips, she is angel-like in her flowered frock.
This two-day-old girl is the new-found darling of the Salem Government Medical College Hospital here since she was admitted on Friday evening.
She was found abandoned at the altar of a temple near Mallasamudram in Namakkal district and brought here to the hospital by Govindasamy from Tiruchengode.
A special team of doctors and nurses found her health parameters to be ‘perfect’ and she weighed 2.3 kg.
She was active with her little hands and legs. Her babbles were a delight to them.
But what perplexed the medical team was the continuous closure of the lids of her huge eyes.
Inspection
A thorough clinical inspection led to a shock. They found her to be blind.
With a tinge of sadness in his voice, Dr. K. Bhaskaran told The Hindu that the baby was suffering from ‘near zero vision.’
“Pupils are missing from her eyes. The condition is medically called ‘Anophthanmia,’ which is a birth defect. Otherwise she is a hale and healthy baby,” he said.
