Scholarships for children of workers

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Labour Welfare Board has decided to grant scholarships to 10,000 children of workers, studying in high schools and colleges this academic year.

Addressing presspersons after a meeting with officials of the Labour Department and representatives of various companies here on Saturday, Labour Minister B.N. Bache Gowda said the scholarship amount had been increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000. The department would invite applications from students. Based on merit, the scholarship amount would be released. As many as 4,000 students received scholarships during the last academic year. Mr. Gowda, who is also the Chairman of the board, said financial assistance ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 would be given to employees undergoing heart surgery, kidney transplantation and treatment for cancer and tuberculosis. The board would decide each case on merit. It had Rs. 18 crore contributed by the Government, workers and employers.

For the benefit of employees, a community hall had been built at Peenya at a cost of Rs. 2.75 crore, he said.
