Psychological counselling in 62 government colleges
Mohamed Imranullah S. and Shastry V. Mallady
MADURAI: The State government has decided to provide psychological counselling to students of 62 government arts and science colleges across the State to bring down the increasing number of suicides owing to depression and other factors.
The free counselling sessions will take place under the auspices of Association of Psycho Analysts, according to K. Ganesan, Higher Education Secretary. It has been decided to conduct the sessions twice in a year — once in the first quarter and then before the final examinations.
Speaking to The Hindu over phone on Friday, he said that the pilot project would first cover all government arts and science colleges after which it might be extended to engineering colleges too. The decision was taken pursuant to a judgement passed by Justice K.N. Basha of the Madras High Court in a case relating to suicide committed by a second year B. Tech. student.
