Petitions of two schools dismissed

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Saturday dismissed petitions by two schools from Hassan, challenging a show cause notice issued to them by the Education Department asking why recognition to their institutions should not be withdrawn.

Notice

Hassan Public School and another school had challenged the notice to them by the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI). They said the DDPI had asked them not to impart education in English and cited that reason for issuing the notice.

The Government contended that Kannada was the medium of instruction of the schools.

However, when officials of the Education Department went for an inspection, they found that they were teaching in English.

When asked, the schools said the Government had introduced a voluntary scheme permitting institutions that had violated the policy on the medium of instruction to teach in English and they too could be allowed to teach in English.

The Government said the scheme was formulated for a specific period and it had been upheld by the High Court.

Scheme

The scheme was for only those schools that had violated the undertaken they had given when they started the institutions.

Most of the schools were found to have violated the State policy on medium of instruction.

It said the voluntary scheme was designed to ensure that schools followed the State policy.

Besides, teaching in English was restricted to students who had taken admission.

Students admitted afresh would have to be taught tin Kannada only.

Justice B.S. Patil dismissed the petitions by the schools and upheld the Government contention.
