KOLKATA: B. K. Birla group company Jay Shree Tea has acquired Jayantika Tea Co. in the Dooars area of West Bengal according to Jay Shree Tea director Jayashree Mohta. She said the acquisition of the tea estate, manufacturing 11 lakh kg annually, is effective from April 1, 2008. Reviewing the operations of the company while addressing the shareholders on Friday, she said Jay Shree had amalgamated some of its group tea companies, while divesting its infotech division into a separate company. Jay Shree has 20 tea estates spread over Assam, West Bengal and in Tamil Nadu, producing 18.5 million kg in 2007-08. She said the crop was lower due to reduced purchase of bought-leaf, mainly on account of high prices. Exports were better and were slated to improve further this fiscal, she said. Company Chairman B. K. Birla said that better cultivation practices in estates in Upper Assam, Cachar, Dooars and in South India were helping the company increase its yield. Current crop is higher in all the regions covered by the company barring Darjeeling where it was lower due to climatic conditions.
