Arasalar bridge work at snail’s pace

KARAIKAL: The slow-down in the process of construction of a new 120-metre bridge across the Arasalar river in Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry has caused resentment among the public.

The Rs.4-crore project to construct the bridge, as a replacement to the earlier structure that was destroyed during the tsunami in 2004, commenced one-and-a-half years ago. Although a new road bridge constructed about 200 metres east of the old bridge at a cost of Rs.4 crore is being utilised for more than two-and-a-half years now, the replacement bridge forming part of the NH – 45A is vital to ease traffic congestion.

According to S. P. Selvashanmugam, lawyer and convenor of Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) and president of Puducherry Cauvery Delta Farmers Legal Action Committee, the Puducherry Government should take immediate steps to construct it so that one-way system could be enforced. It will ease traffic congestion in Karaikal for buses coming from Nagapattinam and also for buses proceeding from Mayiladuturai, Tarangampadi, Kumbakonam and other places to Nagapattinam.
