Tourism Department revives bed and breakfast scheme in Madurai

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Bed and breakfast scheme of the State Tourism Department, under which people who have rooms to spare in their houses can rent them out for tourists for a nominal sum, is to be revived in Madurai district.

According to Collector S.S. Jawahar, an introductory seminar on the scheme will be held at Hotel Tamil Nadu on Alagarkoil Road here on July 4 for persons interested in joining the scheme.

The scheme will provide an opportunity to tourists to get to know of the domestic culture and heritage. Also, house owners can get an additional source of revenue.

Interested persons can register with the Tourism Department. A district-wise list of those participating in the scheme would be posted on the tourism website, http://tamilnadutourism.org/, and also included in the tourism directory being brought out by the Tourism Department.

House owners should provide breakfast to tourists under the scheme. The rental should be a nominal amount fixed by the house owners themselves.

Mr. Jawahar said that flow of tourists was expected to increase this year following the trend witnessed in the last year.

The scheme would help accommodate the increase in number of tourists. In 2007, around 5.26 crore tourists came to Tamil Nadu, an increase of 29.2 per cent over the previous year, an official press release said.

Further information on the scheme could be obtained from the District Tourist Officer at 0452 233 4757.
