KOCHI: All vacancies of doctors in the government health sector would be filled by the end of this year, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy said. Talking after launching a project to renovate the medical ward at the General Hospital here on Saturday, Ms. Sreemathy said the government was considering the prospects of bringing standardisation for the government health institutions. She said that 13 more specialist doctors would be made available at the hospital and asked the hospital management to develop the hospital to a stature of a medical college. Action against doctorsShe argued that if private self-financing medical colleges can be set up with 400-500 beds, there is no reason why the general hospital with 700 beds could not be developed into a medical college hospital. The Minister said that she had terminated 114 doctors from government service the other day for unauthorised absenteeism. This was done so that the posts became vacant to make new recruitment and the patients received service. She shot down the request of Mayor Mercy Williams, who presided over the meeting, to form a consortium of government hospitals in the district so as to share the service of doctors. S. Gopalakrishnan, Director (Finance), IREL handed over a cheque for Rs.12.17 lakh to the Minister. District Collector M. Beena, District Medical Officer, K.T. Remani, Junaid Rehman, RMO, and D. Radhakrishnan, hospital superintendent, were present. K.V. Augustine, president, Rotary Club Cochin Midtown, presented the report.
