Subsidised seed costs farmer his life
Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR: A farmer from Thimmapuram village in Kambadur mandal, H. Karianna (50), died of heart attack while standing in a queue for subsidised seed groundnut being supplied by the State government on the premises of Tahsildar’s office in Kambadur of Anantapur district on Saturday.
According to the information reaching here, the poor farmer has five acres of assigned land and had reached the mandal headquarter village to get the seed last night itself. He sat in the queue from 3 a.m. on Saturday along with other farmers. The seed counter officials started issuing coupons for seed from 10 a.m. and Karianna started complaining of pain in the chest even before the coupons issuance was taken up.
Protest staged
He collapsed in the queue even before he could get his coupons and died within minutes. This is the first such incident during the seed supply this year, though incidents like injuries in jostling at the seed counters and fainting due to waiting in queues for long hours had occurred at a few places. As the information spread, activists of all parties gathered there and took the body of the farmer to the entrance of the Tahsildar’s office, kept it there and staged a protest.
