Court orders compensation
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The Madras High Court on Friday directed the State government to pay compensation of Rs.1 lakh to the legal heirs of a vegetable vendor, who died after an attack by four Head Constables (since suspended) of the Karur Town police station in 1999.
Partly allowing criminal appeals filed by the constables against the life sentence imposed by the trial court, a Division Bench of Justice Prabha Sridevan and Justice M. Jeyapaul said the amount should be paid within a month and recovered from the convicts. They modified the sentence imposed on the constables and held that the first accused A. Abdul Salam was found guilty under Section 304 Part II (culpable homicide) instead of 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
