Polit Bureau meeting of CPI(M) today

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India(Marxist) will have a crucial meeting of its Polit Bureau here on Sunday to discuss the political fallout of the continuing logjam with the UPA government on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal.

The 15-member Polit Bureau, headed by general secretary Prakash Karat, is meeting four days after the ninth meeting of the UPA-Left committee on the India-U.S. nuclear cooperation failed to break the deadlock.

Mr. Karat has already made it clear, in an article in the party organ, People’s Democracy, that the Left would not agree to the government approaching the IAEA Board of Governors to seek its approval on the text of the safeguards agreement.

Political scenario

The meeting is likely to consider the possible political scenario if the government decides to go ahead with the deal, and also the political situation as Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday asked senior party leaders to prepare for elections.

CPI(M) sources said the meeting would discuss the runaway inflation, which has broken a 13-year-old record, and the high prices of food and essential items that have upset middle class budgets and left the poorer sections suffering.

Mr. Karat has also criticised the government for getting its priorities wrong and failing to engage itself on a war-footing to curb inflation and provide immediate relief to the people.
