Action advised against erring drivers Decision taken at review meeting of RTOs CHENNAI: Regional Transport Officers (RTO) have been asked to initiate action against erring drivers and cancel permits of vehicles involved in smuggling rice meant for the public distribution system. The decision was taken at a review meeting of RTOs on Friday. Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said with a view to helping the public, the State government had allocated funds for improving the infrastructure of RTO offices. The officers should expedite this work. The Transport Department had obtained approval from the government to fill vacancies of office assistants, drivers and night watchmen. The RTOs should take immediate steps to complete this work. The RTOs were advised to identify land for constructing new office buildings. They were also asked to ensure that people were able to procure various forms without difficulty. At present, 25 RTOs in the State were issuing computerised learner’s licences. This system should be introduced soon in all RTO offices. A project had been launched to connect all the RTOs in the State through broadband. This work should be completed at the earliest and, by July 25, it should be implemented, the RTOs were told. The officials should take steps to publicise various Internet services provided by the Department. Renewing the heavy vehicle licence and for obtaining a new heavy vehicle licence, the Government had announced a special camp. The RTOs should take steps to implement this programme from October 1, they were informed. With the Government sanctioning powers to RTOs to collect taxes, they should collect the pending tax amounts without delay, they were told. It was also decided that the RTOs should explore the possibility of creating prepaid auto system centres in other parts of the city on the lines of the Central railway station and Koyambedu bus terminus, where they were functioning successfully, the RTOs were told. C.P. Singh, Special Commissioner, Transport Department and Joint Transport Commissioners attended the meeting.
