30 p.c. interim relief for newspaper employees

Aarti Dhar

NEW DELHI: The two wage boards for working journalists and non-journalists in newspapers and news agencies, headed by Justice K. Narayana Kurup, have recommended an interim relief of 30 per cent of basic salary for newspaper employees with effect from January 8, 2008.

This decision was arrived at through voting after a detailed discussion at a Board meeting held here on Saturday under the chairmanship of Mr. Justice Kurup.

The recommendation for interim relief will now be submitted to the Union Labour and Employment Ministry.

The representative of employees and independent members supported the resolution for 30 per cent interim relief, two representatives from the management on each Board opposed it.

One representative was not present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, reacting to the recommendation, trade union leaders in the newspaper industry demanded an increase in the proposed hike.

‘Below expectations’

The leaders of the Confederation of Newspapers and News Agencies organisations said the recommendation was “below our expectations.” They said the inflation rate had touched 11.42 per cent that had adversely impacted the common man, including employees of the newspaper industry.

The leaders said they would soon meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes and Left leaders to demand a hike in the quantum of the interim relief.
