Music and dance fete off to a classical start

ANANTAPUR: The eight-day classical music and dance festival organised as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Sri Thyagaraja Sangeetha Sabha (STSS) was off to classical start here on Sunday with renowned playback singer S.P. Balasubramanyam rendering ‘pibare rama rasam’. He inaugurated the Thyagaraja Marg earlier in the day.

Chief Electoral Officer I.V. Subba Rao inaugurated Anne Ferrer function hall on the STSS premises. Vocal concert by Latha Shyam and Prabhavathi, known as Anantapur Sisters, and vocal duet concert by Sheshacari and Raghavachari, known as Hyderbad Brothers, enthralled the music lovers in the evening.

Speaking to newspersons during the day Mr. Balasubramanyam said the existing laws had not enough tooth to curb piracy in the audio and video industry. Piracy was hitting the small and medium producers hard and it worse than prostitution. He sought the cooperation of music and film lovers to help fight the piracy.

Chairman f the golden jubilee music and dance festival committee D. Harishcandra Rama and founder of STSS C.N. Gnaneswar Rao Vuthareker stated that the festival would conclude with 78th birthday celebrations of Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna on July 6. Concerts by Mayavaram Sisters (vocal), Mysore Brothers (violin), Akkarai Sisters (vocal), Manda Sudharani (vocal), Krishnakumar and Binny (vocal), Mala Chandrasekhar (flute), Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram (Carnatic and Hindustani Jugalbandi) and Unnikrishnanan (vocal) would be held as part of the festival. Besides, dance performances by Rajeswari Sainath (bharatanatyam), Krishna Parijatham dance ballet by Shobha Naidu, Saraswathi (bharatanatyam) and performances by local artistes would also form part of the festival.
