The Raghavan Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to monitor measures to stop ragging in higher educational institutions has asked regulatory bodies to strictly enforce anti-ragging regulations. After the Supreme Court’s intervention and the formation of the Raghavan Committee, ragging incidents have come down. Sona College of Technology at Salem has been following the guidelines for many years and no ragging has taken place in the college in over a decade. Even before the first year students join the college, the principal, wardens and faculty members meet senior students and advise them not to indulge in ragging. V.S.Venkatavaradan, Salem. Good citizens Some schools produce good results by admitting only bright students who score high marks in all subjects bringing laurels to their schools. But this trend is detrimental to equally good schools with fine infrastructure. There are two good schools in rural areas of Trichy district run on charity which have recorded 100 per cent pass both in X an XII public examinations this year. But very few people are aware of this. The purpose of education is to bring out the best in children and make them good citizens. Teachers and parents should make them strong both in mind and body. Students should realise the need for hard work and understand their capabilities. T.N. Arthanari, Salem. Gas and family cardThe announcement by the government that cooking gas will be supplied only to family card holders has caused a lot of difficulties to families and also spawned corruption. Many people who applied for family cards have had to wait for months or even a year or more. The Government should ensure that families who already get cooking gas continue to get it irrespective of whether they have ration cards or not. Requirement of the ration card should be only for the new gas connection. The situation in the office at Salem where the ration cards are issued is pathetic what with hundreds of people thronging the place and wasting their time. Will the Collector look into this and do something to make the process more customer-friendly? N. Sreedharan, Salem. Restore street lightsThe highways department has completed road widening work between Salem Junction and Fairlands police station through Five Roads junction. Sodium vapour street light poles on the road had been removed while the work was being carried out. However, the poles were not restored once the work was completed. Salem Corporation should take steps immediately to fix the lights between Sooramangalam police station and Fairlands police. Anirudh, Salem.
