Facilities needed

Erode railway station is the busiest station in the Salem division.

More than 4,000 passengers use the railway station every day.

But the infrastructure there is very poor and inadequate.

There is no proper drinking water facility in the ticket reservation counter.

There is no toilet facility too.

Nor is there proper vehicle parking sheds for those who need them.

Open ticket counters are less than the required number.

During peak hours it is very difficult to get an open ticket owing to long queues.

There is no separate counter for selling platform tickets to visitors.

Because of absence of toilets people are forced to attend the calls of nature in the open leading to environmental pollution in the area.

Vehicles are parked in the open without proper sheds.

Rs. 3 is collected for parking outside the parking place and Rs. 5 inside.

Contractors force vehicle owners, visiting the station for a short time, to park vehicles in their place and pay Rs. 3. Railways should improve facilities in the station.

V.S. Ganesamurthy,

Erode.

Pedestrian path

Gandhiji Road is an arterial road in Erode connecting the city to important centres.

There is heavy movement of vehicles between the Railway Junction circle and Brough Road park crossing.

There is no pavement on this stretch of road with shopkeepers encroaching upon the space meant for pedestrians who have to walk on the side of the road, running the risk of being knocked down by speeding vehicles.

I request the authorities concerned to construct a median on this road and also provide a path for pedestrians.

R. Suresh,

Erode. (Readers can mail to cbereaders@thehindu.co.in with address and phone number)
