NEW DELHI: Continuing his dream run, Parimarjan Negi defeated fellow Grandmaster G. N. Gopal and International Master R. R. Laxman to maintain his winning sequence after five rounds of the Philadelphia International Open chess tournament at Philadelphia on Saturday. The twin victories took Negi’s tally to five points and put him one point clear of teammate S. Arun Prasad. With four rounds to go, National champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Gopal, Laxman and K. Ratnakaran are on 3.5 points each. Other Indians in the fray are Abhijit Kunte, M. R. Venkatesh, Esha Karavade (3 each), Nisha Mohota (2.5), Swati Ghate, Aarthie Ramaswamy (2 each), Kiran Manisha Mohanty and Sai Meera (1.5 each). Meanwhile, in the opening round of Paris International Open in Paris, triple International Master norm-holder 12-year-old Sahaj Grover made an encouraging start when he drew with the ninth-seeded Cuban Grandmaster Omar Alemida Quinta, rated 2527. In the Sort Open at Sort, Spain, Abhijeet Gupta (five points) moved to joint second spot after beating teammate T. Abhay. Bulgaria’s Aleksander Delchev leads with 5.5 points.
