Harish guides Collage Group to victory

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Harish Kumar produced a thoroughly professional performance to guide Collage Group to a comfortable 51-run victory over Mohan Meakin in the final of the DDCA Hot Weather cricket tournament at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Sunday.

Harish was adjudged the ‘man of the match’ for his innings of 60 and his agility in pulling off two runs outs.

On a humid day, Collage did well to win the toss and earn the advantage of setting a target on a pitch that tested batting skills to the optimum. The ball stopped and crawled and stroke-making became an increasingly hazardous task, but Harish, a veteran in local cricket, adapted sensibly. He chose to play the waiting game.

The emphasis was on setting a stiff target and Harish accomplished the job through an equally determined and disciplined Ashish Sharma, who made 54 off 50 balls with three fours. Harish’s contribution was 60 off 81 balls with five fours and two sixes. His knock was the decisive factor in Collage making things difficult for Meakin.

In the middle order, valuable offerings by Sanjay Bamal (49 off 36 balls with four 4s and two 6s) and Amardeep Sonklar (30 off 35 balls) served Collage handsomely.

In the afternoon, the Collage spinners called the shots and Meakin surrendered without much fight even though last-man Rahul Prasad slammed a 67-ball 54 (seven 4s) to delay the end. Losing wickets regularly meant that Meakin remained under constant pressure and two run outs in the middle order left it frustrated. Vijay Arya (three for 38) and Rohit Mehra (two for 28) were the outstanding bowlers for Collage.

The scores: Collage 240 for seven in 40 overs (Harish Kumar 60, Ashish Sharma 50, Sanjay Bamal 49, Amardeep Sonkar 30) beat Mohan Meakin 189 in 38.1 overs (Rahul Prasad 54, Aditya Jain 37, Vijay Arya three for 38).
